The solar controller is called the solar charge and discharge controller and is an automatic control device used in a solar power generation system to control the charging of the multi-row solar cell array to the battery and the battery to the solar inverter load. Almost all solar power systems powered by batteries require a solar charge and discharge controller. The function of the solar charge-discharge controller is to adjust the power, the power delivered from the solar panel to the battery. Battery overshoot, at least very significantly reduce the battery life, from the worst damage to the battery until it can not be used normally.

The basic function of the solar charge-discharge controller is to control the battery voltage and open the circuit, and also to stop the battery charging when the battery voltage rises to a certain degree. The old version of the controller mechanically completes the opening or closing of the control circuit and stops or starts the power delivered to the battery. Controllers are used in most photovoltaic systems to protect the battery from overcharging or overdischarging. Over-charging may vaporize the electrolyte in the battery, causing failure, and overdischarging the battery may cause premature failure of the battery. Overcharge and overdischarge can damage the load. Therefore, the controller is one of the core components of the photovoltaic power generation system and is also the main part of the balance system BOS (Balance of System).

In a small photovoltaic system, the controller is also referred to as a charge and discharge controller and mainly serves to prevent overcharge and overdischarge of the battery. In large and medium-sized photovoltaic systems, the controller takes charge of the energy balance management of the photovoltaic system, protects the storage battery and the entire photovoltaic system from normal work, and shows the system’s working status and other important functions. The controller can be a single-use device or it can be integrated with the inverter system.

The controller should have the following features:

a)Prevent overcharge and overdischarge of the battery and prolong battery life.

b) Prevent the polarity of the solar cell array and the battery from being reversed.

c) Prevent internal short circuits of loads, controllers, inverters and other equipment.

d) Breakdown protection due to lightning strikes.

e) PV system working status display: Battery state of charge SOC display and battery terminal voltage display;

Load status display (consumption, etc.); Photovoltaic array work status (display charging voltage, charging current, charging capacity, etc.);

Auxiliary power supply status display; environmental status display (solar radiation, temperature, wind speed, etc.)

f) Photovoltaic system information storage (system power generation, power loss, power loss records, fault records, etc.).

g) Optimized system energy management (MPPT, Maximan Power Point Tracking, temperature compensation, optimal compensation, optimal start-up of special loads and automatic switching of backup power, etc.)

h) PV system failure alarm

i) Photovoltaic system telemetry, remote control, remote signaling, etc.

The modern charge-discharge controller uses pulse-width modulation (PWM), which slowly reduces the amount of power delivered to the battery when the battery is slowly charged near saturation. This PWM controller greatly reduces the load on the battery and achieves a full state of charge, extending the life of the battery. This controller allows the battery to fully reach full charge (also known as float charging). The PWM is more complex than before but does not interrupt any line connected to it.

The latest and best solar charge and discharge controller is called the maximum power tracking point or MPPT. When the MPPT controller is basically able to put the excess voltage into amps. This has the advantage of a pair of transformations in various fields.
